The Local Interstellar Ultraviolet Radiation Field
نویسنده
چکیده
I have used theHipparcos Input Catalogue, together with Kurucz model stellar atmospheres and information on the strength of the interstellar extinction, to create a model of the expected intensity and spectral distribution of the local interstellar ultraviolet radiation field, under various assumptions concerning the albedo a of the interstellar grains. (This ultraviolet radiation field is of particular interest because of the fact that ultraviolet radiation is capable of profoundly affecting the chemistry of the interstellar medium.) By comparing my models with the observations, I am able to conclude that the albedo a of the interstellar grains in the far-ultraviolet is very low, perhaps a 1⁄4 0:1. I also advance arguments that my present determination of this albedo is much more reliable than any of the many previous (and conflicting) ultraviolet interstellar grain albedo determinations. Beyond this, I show that the ultraviolet background radiation that is observed at high Galactic latitudesmust be extragalactic in origin, as it cannot be backscatter of the interstellar radiation field. The feedback of massive stars on interstellar astrochemical processes
Astrochemistry is a discipline that studies physico-chemical processes in astrophysical environments. Such environments are characterized by conditions that are substantially different from those existing in usual chemical laboratories. Models which aim to explain the formation of molecular species in interstellar environments must take into account various factors, including many that are dire...
متن کاملIsotope selective photodissociation of N2 by the interstellar radiation field and cosmic rays
Context. Photodissociation of N2 and 14N15N occurs in interstellar clouds, circumstellar envelopes, protoplanetary discs, and other environments due to ultraviolet radiation originating from stellar sources and the presence of cosmic rays. This source of N atoms initiates the formation of more complex N-bearing species and may influence their isotopic composition. Aims. We study the photodissoc...
متن کاملPhotodissociation of small carbonaceous molecules of astrophysical interest
Astronomical observations have shown that small carbonaceous molecules can persist in interstellar clouds exposed to intense ultraviolet radiation. Current astrochemical models lack quantitative information on photodissociation rates in order to interpret these data. We here present ab initio multi-reference configurationinteraction calculations of the vertical excitation energies, transition d...
متن کاملNeutral Atomic Phases of the ISM in the Galaxy
Much of the interstellar medium in disk galaxies is in the form of neutral atomic hydrogen, H I. This gas can be in thermal equilibrium at relatively low temperatures, T < ∼ 300 K (the cold neutral medium, or CNM) or at temperatures somewhat less than 10 K (the warm neutral medium, or WNM). These two phases can coexist over a narrow range of pressures, Pmin ≤ P ≤ Pmax. We determine Pmin and Pma...
متن کاملThe Local Bubble, Local Fluff, and Heliosphere
The properties of the Local Bubble, Local Fluff complex of nearby interstellar clouds, and the heliosphere are mutually constrained by data and theory. Observations and models of the diffuse radiation field, interstellar ionization, pick-up ion and anomalous cosmic-ray populations, and interstellar dust link the physics of these regions. The differences between the one-asymmetric-superbubble an...
